This sculpture is part of the Endangered Animals Art Project headed by Capitol Hill Arts Workshop to raise awareness about animals that were once able to live in Rock Creek Park but are no longer able to. “Northern Bobwhite” is installed on a lamppost near the National Zoo. The eyes are plastic bottle caps and the wings were created using discarded plastic bags, referencing the danger of plastic that is frequently found in nests. A QR code on the lamppost allows viewers to listen to a video of Wendy explaining that plastic can ensnare birds, restricting their movement. This renders them unable to search for food and, if their necks become entangled, they are unable to breathe. The sculpture encourages passersby to exchange single use plastic bags for reusable bags which is an easily accessible lifestyle change. The project was in partnership with Cleveland Park Main Street & Woodley Park Main Street with support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
