(Re)Purposed Petals

Presented with support from the Capitol Riverfront BID, two hundred sixty (260) discarded plastic bags were hand-cut into nearly 5000 circles which were used to create approximately 550 cherry blossoms. Visitors to the National Cherry Blossom Festival created these blossoms during the Petalpalooza event. The blossoms were added to an arbor in real time throughout the day. Engaging the community in the creation process raised awareness of the importance of reducing waste to protect the environment that nourishes Washington, DC’s famous cherry blossom trees. To extend its reach, (Re)Purposed Petals was installed at neighborhood businesses including the Thompson Hotel, District Winery, and Kilwins. It is now in the Capitol Riverfront BID permanent collection.
